I was out in the yard with my dog, Bentley. He pooped. He then wanted to sit a few feet away from his pile o' poop in the front yard and enjoy the weather. I looked back and about 6 feet away was his fresh poop, covered with flies. I then asked myself, why do flies like poop?
The question just popped into my head, so I did a little research and found my answer at "I'm A Useless Info Junkie." I don't know that the info is entirely useless, but it did answer the stinky question that was on my mind:
"...flies like poop because they are attracted to moist organic material and they also feed on the decaying matter. In it, they lay their eggs and their larvae will grow by getting all the nutrients they need. In addition, some adult flies will feed from it too.
That being said, not all flies like poop as different species are attracted to different food sources. For example, some are attracted to ripe fruit, some to meat scraps while other to milk products or yeast. In fact, the only two species that are attracted to feces are house flies...and flesh flies..." I Am A Useless Info Junkie
There you have it. The next time you see dog poop covered in flies now you know why they like it so much. Whew! That is a load off my mind. Stuart James
