In Hamilton County Tennessee, the County is facing an increase in Cornavirus infections. The County Mayor is a Republican. He ignored the Cornavirus threat and wanted to rush to reopen and return to normal. Now the County (and the State of Tennessee) are facing increases in infections causing a threat to human life.
After the obvious happened, what does the GOP Mayor do? He continues to follow the GOP head in the sand approach hoping people will do the right thing:
(Chattanooga Times Free Press) “In Hamilton County, Mayor Jim Coppinger has said throughout the pandemic that he is hesitant to mandate anything without enforcement power and that he, like Gov. Lee, would trust in the "common sense" of citizens to take safety precautions.
‘We've always been hopeful that people would comply with our requests as we started reopening things,’ Coppinger told the Times Free Press Monday. ‘We've always been hopeful that people would be respectful of others because you're not only protecting yourself but you're protecting them ... but we are continuing, as we have for the last several weeks, to see a high percentage of people inside buildings not in compliance.’
With a lack of masks being worn and both cases and deaths climbing rapidly in the county, Coppinger said Monday he is ‘seriously considering’ a mask mandate.
‘I would certainly be less than honest if I didn't tell you that we're taking all of our options seriously now,’ he said. ‘We're having to look at how to ensure that safety precautions are being met.’"
Both Mr. Coppinger and Mr. Lee are infected with the GOP Head in The Sand Virus. Neither took decisive action designed to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. Instead both took the political option being “hopeful that people would be respectful of others…” Well, many have not been respectful at all.
Like so many Republicans, both Coppinger and Lee are following the lead of a President who is simply out of touch with reality. Both are failing to take comprehensive action to come up with a clear and concise plan to stop the spread of the coronavirus, choosing to do the political thing not the medically correct thing. Now that Tennessee is facing a significant increase in infections both Coppinger and Lee are still hoping that people “will do the right thing.”
However, too many people are not doing the right thing. As such, they are spreading the virus to others including those who want to do the right thing. People are doing the wrong thing amplifying the public health and economic crisis that the nation, and states like Tennessee are facing.
There are those times, for the protection of the public health, where the government has to do the right thing by mandating precautions that will stop the spread of an infectious virus, any virus.
We have suffered from a failure in leadership which is clearly shown by both Mr. Coppinger and Mr. Lee’s hesitancy and failure to act. While both hope that people will do the right thing, states like Tennessee are suffering from a growing pandemic that threatens our economy and our public health.
Had Mr. Coppenger and Mr. Lee, like so many others, taken decisive action, even at the cost of political popularity, our economy would not be facing another significant hit due to the spread of a dangerous virus. Now, both the economy and the public health are threatened once again because of a failure in leadership. Coppinger and Lee, like so many other politicians, are infected with the GOP Head in The Sand Virus which is more dangerous than the coronavirus could ever be.
So, while the Coronavirus spreads Coppinger and Lee have their heads in the sand, hoping people will do the right thing.
