CBS News is reporting that Donald Trump warned senators that if they vote against him their heads will be on a pike. The report states:
Democrats are wrapping up their impeachment arguments on Friday, telling senators they can’t trust President Trump. Nancy Cordes has learned that a Trump confidante reportedly told Republican senators that “a vote against the president and your head will be on a pike.” She breaks down the implications on Capitol Hill.
Adam Schiff used the unsubstantiated statement in his closing arguments in The Senate.
Although the “head on the pike” statement sounds like something Donald Trump would say, it is an unsubstantiated statement from an unnamed Trump confidante. Schiff’s use of the statement is a political miscalculation that angered moderate Senators, moderates the House Managers need on a crucial vote for more evidence in the impeachment trial.
72% of people support hearing more evidence. Schiff’s statement may not impact that polling number, but it may impact how moderate Senators feel about witnesses and evidence. Moreover, it gives the Trump team some fuel in making their arguments using Schiff’s statement as a key reason to support the position that this trial is a witch hunt.
CBS should not have used the statement, without verification. This overt threat may have been made by Trump, but it is unverified. Moreover, to report on the statement during a time when the Senate is considering the grave consequence of removing Trump from office is irresponsible. CBS should not have used the statement, which is mentioned in passing in its report without further clarification or context.
Schiff was also irresponsible in using the statement, it undermined the credibility he gained during his well put arguments. The Trump team will now use Schiff’s statement in continued efforts to divert attention away from the facts.
If the statement is proven true, it is yet another reason to believe what many already know-Donald Trump is using his office for personal gain and places his interests above all others. However, with that said, CBS News was irresponsible for including the statement it the report. Adam Schiff made a political miscalculation in using an unsubstantiated statement in his closing.
The Trump defense team now has a gate to open taking Senators and the American public down a rabbit trail.
The only way to get to the truth is to call witnesses and use additional evidence. Forget about the “head on the pike” type comments. The evidence appears to be overwhelming against Donald Trump.
“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.”
