Mitch McConnell was saying that an impeachment trial would at least start with no witnesses creating uncertainty as to the rules and processes of the Senate impeachment trial. McConnell said he would work with Trump suggesting Trump and McConnell would be cooperating on the impeachment trial. Then there is the idea of a fast trial based on evidence collected in the House of Representatives…
McConnell has resisted the idea, instead seeking a fast trial based on evidence collected in the House of Representatives before it voted last month to impeach Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
While Republicans are still divided over whether the Senate should eventually hear more testimony, the vast majority of them have agreed to leave the decision until after the trial has started, McConnell told a news conference. Reuters
Now there is talk of a three to five week impeachment trial…
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is telling his Republican conference he expects the impeachment trial for President Trump to begin on Tuesday, January 21, and last potentially three to five weeks, two GOP senators told CBS News. CBS
Why is there an apparent shift? Public opinion. Polling shows that Americans are thinking differently than the GOP on this issue:
A majority of Americans want the Senate to hold a full impeachment trial, rather than “allowing voters to decide” the fate of President Donald Trump, according to a new LX/Morning Consult poll... Younger Americans drove this result: No age groups were more in favor of a full trial than Generation Z and millennials.
The poll…shows 55% of U.S. adults support a full trial of President Trump. Forty-five percent responded that they preferred to let voters decide the president's fate in the November election. NBC
Therefore, the GOP may be responding to shifting public opinion. If it is accurate that 55% of U.S. adults support an impeachment trial with evidence and witnesses, Senate republicans will conduct a full impeachment trial, with evidence and witnesses. McConnell has clearly shown that the impeachment trial is political, and that he is acting in the political interests of the GOP. Politics always shifts with public opinion and McConnell is no exception.
Therefore, it is easy to conclude that a three to five week trial is in response to shifting public opinion on the scope and length of an impeachment trial in the Senate.
“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.”
