If you do not live in Tennessee, you may not know Phil Bredesen. If you live in Tennessee, you know Phil Bredesen. You know he was a Democratic governor who narrowly won his first term. You know that he built coalitions during that first term. You know that those coalitions resulted in success, success so strong he won every county in Tennessee in his successful run for reelection.
Phil Bredesen ran as a Democrat. However, he broke barriers between Republicans and Democrats in 8 successful years as Governor of Tennessee.
Since he left office, Tennessee has become red, so red that it is no longer the Big Orange state…unless you are talking about Tennessee’s misguided support for Big Orange Trump.
What Tennessee needs is a candidate for Senate who looks after the State’s, and the Nation’s wellbeing. It needs a candidate for Senate who will cross party lines and get the job done. Bredesen, as Tennessee’s governor, showed he could get the job done, helping Tennessee grow and prosper.
Can he transfer that success into a successful run for Senate?
Until now, Tennessee was a hopeless cause for Democrats. However, Bredesen may be able to build a coalition showing the true nature of “Southern Democrats” by capturing a state that no political pundit in their right mind would say…
“A Democrat can win in Tennessee.”
This is not about Democrat or Republican, this election (if Bredesen plays it right) is about the disconnect between Washington and America. It is about reconnecting and dong the right, not the political, thing. Phil Bredesen’s history is proving that he can do this, and maybe more.
However, first he must get elected. We think it is possible, and we think this is a race to watch.
Bredesen says he is applying for the job. The question is can he convince a Trump state to give him the job he is applying for?
In this case, Bredesen is a candidate Tennessee might hire, which may place a purely red state in play.
