The Ossoff vs. Handel race is turning out to be one of the most expensive campaigns in special election history.
Ossoff raised more than $23 million, most from outside Georgia. He emphasizes it's mostly from individual donors. Handel notes that many of those people live in Democratic-leaning states like California, New York and Massachusetts.
Of course, Handel's benefited from outside money, too; it just hasn't flowed through her campaign, which has raised less than a quarter of Ossoff's haul.
The Congressional Leadership Fund, a political action committee backed by House Speaker Paul Ryan, has spent $7 million on her behalf. National Republicans' House campaign arm added $4.5 million, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce chipped in another seven figures. A chunk of the $5 million Handel raised herself came in three fundraisers headlined by Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and House Speaker Paul Ryan. MSN
As of June 18, 2017 we found the following on how Ossoff and Handel are doing with fundraising within Georgia.
Given the national attention, both Ossoff and Handel have raised money from around the country -- not just at home. While the most cash was raised locally in Georgia, donors from California and New York sent considerable cash in too. According to FEC data, Ossoff has raised $578,000 in Georgia, $536,356.61 from sources in California, and $423,000 from New York.
Handel has received $340,000 from within Georgia, $16,200.00 from California, and $8,400.00 from New York donors. WSBTV Atlanta
Therefore, if you combine the polling we reported with the fundraising from Georgia, Ossoff has an advantage over Handel.
As we previously said, the polling data shows that Ossoff has a slim but consistent lead in the polls. If you combine the polling with the money raised in the state (ignoring the significant amounts of money coming from other sources and out of the state of Georgia), the favorite continues to be Ossoff.
Maybe Ossoff is packing that 1-2 punch to pull a special election upset of historical significance?
Please note there are many factors to consider, including campaign organization and voter turnout. See our post regarding the overall campaign for more information.
