U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday called the mass shooting in Texas that left at least 26 people dead in a church a "mental health problem," not "a guns situation." Reuters
"We have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries. But this isn’t a guns situation," he said. "Fortunately somebody else had a gun that was shooting in the opposite direction." Donald Trump. As reported by Reuters.
Yes, there was somebody shooting in the opposite direction. However, that shooter did not stop a gunman from killing 26 people in 15 seconds. The person shooting in the opposite direction could not, and did not, prevent a mass shooting. Moreover, the "man who shot in the opposite direction" confronted the shooter after he left the church, after the killing spree was over. AP
The issue is one of mental health and involves a system that allows those who are mentally ill to obtain guns. Therefore, this is not a mental health problem, it is a mental health and gun problem.
There are over 310 million guns in America, and those guns fall into the hands of the mentally ill and the criminally motivated. Maybe it is time to look at this as a guns and people with guns issue...
The bottom line is guns and people kill...this is a truth we can no longer ignore. It is a shame that the man in the Oval Office does not recognize the seriousness of this issue.
